Athletic Training Education Program

The Oklahoma State University Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) . The major of Athletic Training was approved by the University in 2001 and is housed in the School of Applied Health, Exercise and Psychology. In the spring of 2007, the ATEP received re-accreditation through 2014. Students entering the major begin completing didactic course work while concurrently gaining valuable directed observation experience of various Athletic Training settings including Division I intercollegiate athletics, physical therapy clinics, high schools and other appropriate health care areas as a Prospective Athletic Training Student (ATS). These experiences are meant to give the student a true appreciation of the dynamics the profession exhibits.

Once accepted into the program as upperclassman (at the end of the spring semester in freshman year), students are assigned to a Board of Certification (BOC) Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) where they are responsible to provide for the overall health care of patients over the course of their respective seasons. Clinical instruction of students is achieved through direct supervision of a licensed physician and the staff ATC.

The curriculum is based in the human sciences with anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, pharmacology, nutrition and psychology providing the theoretical foundation of student inquiry. Students learn how to apply these theoretical concepts while in the clinical setting working under licensed physicians, ATC's, Physical Therapists and other allied health care professionals. This balance of theory and practical application prepares students to sit for the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification examination where upon successful completion, may earn the credentials ATC.
